How to use a vision board to replace a bad habit

One of the easiest ways to drop a habit is to give the habit a replacement. You keep the moment the old habit shows up and do something new in that spot. A vision board helps with the part that fades first, remembering why you started. Here is a plan you can start today, plus free resources to go with it.

How habit replacement works

Most habits follow the same loop. Something sets the habit off, you do the routine, and you get a small reward. The trigger might be a time of day, a place, a feeling or another habit. To replace a habit, keep the trigger and the reward and change the routine in the middle.

  • Scrolling your phone in bed becomes reading ten pages, with the book on your pillow.
  • A drink after work becomes a walk around the block, then a sparkling water.
  • A snack at your desk at 3pm becomes a glass of water and a stretch.
  • Buying lunch out becomes packing lunch the night before, with the money going to a trip fund.

Step 1: Name the old habit and its trigger

Write the habit down, then write when the habit happens. Be specific. "Every night at 10 when I get into bed" is easier to plan around than "at night".

Step 2: Pick one replacement

Choose a routine small enough to do on your worst day: ten pages, ten minutes, one glass of water. You can grow the routine later. Replace one habit at a time, so each day's check-in is a clear yes or no.

Step 3: Put the payoff on your vision board

Pick one photo of what the change gets you: the trip the savings pay for, the race the morning runs lead to, the clear head after a month without drinking. Put the photo where the trigger happens. Your phone's lock screen works for a phone habit, and a printout on the fridge works for a kitchen habit. Here is how to put a vision board on your lock screen.

Step 4: Track each day you choose the new routine

Check off every day you pick the replacement. Seeing the days add up keeps the new routine going after the first burst of motivation wears off. Start with 7 days, then go for 30.

Reveal the Dream puts steps 3 and 4 in one place. The photo of your goal starts covered, and each day you check in, one piece is uncovered. By the last day the whole photo is showing. Reveal the Dream is free on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS and Windows.

Step 5: Plan for the day you slip

You will miss a day at some point. Decide now what happens next: you do the new routine at the next trigger, and the journey keeps going. In Reveal the Dream a missed day leaves that piece covered and keeps everything you already uncovered, so one slip costs one day. More on what to do when you miss a day.
