Reveal the Dream is a desktop app for Linux, the same one that runs on Windows. The goal you are working toward sits on your desktop while you work.
What it does
You pick a photo of the thing you are working toward. It starts covered, divided into one piece per day of a journey you choose. Every daily check-in uncovers one more piece, until the whole photograph is there.
Miss a day and that piece stays covered. Nothing resets, and everything you already uncovered stays uncovered. There is no streak to lose.
Installing the AppImage
Download the AppImage, open its Properties and allow it to run as a program, then open it. Nothing else needs installing first. Keep the file wherever you like, such as an Applications folder in your home folder. When an update is ready the app offers it, checks that the new file is signed by us, and swaps it in place.
On Linux specifically
- A mini window. Small, borderless, remembers where you put it, and asks to stay above your other windows while you work.
- Your daily reminder arrives in your desktop's own notifications, through the standard notify-send command.
- The system tray, where your desktop has one. Closing the window keeps the app running in the tray. GNOME has no tray unless you add an extension, so there closing the window quits the app, and reminders arrive while it is open.
- A countdown to your next check-in in the app and the mini window. One switch in Settings turns it off.
- Text color that suits your photo. White, cream, charcoal or black for the words over the picture. Free.
There is no Linux widget. The mini window is the Linux way to keep the photo in view.
Backup and sync
Phones have a free place to back up to. An iPhone has iCloud and an Android phone has Google. Linux has neither, so on the free version your journeys live on this computer and nowhere else.
Premium's cross-platform sync is the backup. Sync keeps your journeys in step between this computer, a Mac, a Windows PC, an iPhone or an Android phone. This computer encrypts the copy before sending, so we cannot read your journeys. Keep the recovery code the app gives you. That code opens the copy on a new machine.
Free, and what Premium adds
Free on Linux: one journey at a time, 7 or 30 day lengths, the Petals reveal style, the mini window, the countdown, your choice of text color, a daily reminder, and exporting a finished reveal as an image.
Premium adds sync and backup, several journeys at once, custom journey lengths, rest days so the weekdays you take off are not missed days, repeating journeys, seven cover colors, the Rings and Arcs reveal styles, your finished photos as a gallery with per-journey results, and App Lock, which on Linux is a password you set. Premium is cheapest bought here.
Reveal the Dream on your other devices
The same journey runs on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android and Wear OS, and Premium sync keeps a Linux PC in step with them. Buy Premium once and it unlocks every one of those apps.
