The 365 day challenge: how to do something every day for a year

A 365 day challenge is one small thing you do every day for a year: a photo a day, ten minutes of reading, a walk, a page of writing. A year is long enough to change who you are and short enough to picture the end.

Pick something small enough for your worst day

A 30 day challenge can survive on enthusiasm. A year cannot. Somewhere around the second month you will be sick, traveling or simply tired, and the challenge has to fit inside that day as well. Choose the smallest version that still counts: one push-up on the bad days is a day kept, and fifty on the good ones is a bonus.

  • A photo a day. The classic, and the easiest to keep because it takes ten seconds.
  • Read ten pages. Roughly fifteen books by the end of the year.
  • Move for ten minutes. A walk counts.
  • Write three sentences. A journal you will be glad to have in a year.
  • Save a little. A fixed amount, or one more than yesterday.

Plan for missed days before the first one

Over 365 days you will miss some. Decide now what a miss means, so it does not decide for you. The rule that keeps most people going is simple: a missed day stays missed, and tomorrow is just tomorrow. Nothing resets to zero. Day 200 after a miss is still day 200.

A streak counter works against this. It turns one missed day into a lost year, and that is usually the day people stop. More on that in what to do when you miss a day.

Make the year visible

A year is hard to feel from the inside. Day 143 looks exactly like day 142. Something you can see growing helps: a jar of marbles, a wall calendar with crosses, a photo slowly coming into view.

Reveal the Dream does the last one. Pick a photo of what the year is for, and it starts covered. Each check-in uncovers one piece, in the app, on your home screen widget and on your watch. With Day by day in Premium there is no end date: every 365 days a new round starts with the same photo, and your missed days and milestones carry on with it. The free version runs 7 and 30 day journeys, which are a good way to test a habit before you give it a year.

Questions people ask

Do I have to do it every single day?

Aim for every day and expect misses. Finishing the year with 330 days done is a far better result than quitting at day 40 because you missed one.

Can I start in the middle of the year?

Yes. Day one is whatever day you start. A year from today works as well as a year from January.

What if I want weekends off?

Then plan them in. Rest days you choose in advance are part of the plan, and they do not count as misses. See how many rest days to take.
