How to make a habit tracker wallpaper on Windows

A habit tracker wallpaper puts your goal on the Windows desktop, so you see the reason for the habit every time you close a window. Setting one up takes a minute. Here are the steps, what a wallpaper can't do on its own, and how Reveal the Dream adds a tracker that changes each day you check in.

Pick the picture

Choose a photo of what the habit gets you: the race you are training for, the trip you are saving for, the kitchen you want to cook in every night. One clear photo works better on a desktop than a busy collage, because icons and windows sit on top of the picture. A wide landscape photo fills a monitor without much cropping.

How to set it as your wallpaper on Windows 11

  1. Save the photo somewhere easy to find, like your Pictures folder.
  2. Open Settings, then Personalization, then Background.
  3. Next to Personalize your background, choose Picture.
  4. Select Browse photos and pick your file.
  5. Next to Choose a fit for your desktop image, pick Fill so the photo covers the whole screen.

On Windows 10 the setting is in the same place, under Settings, then Personalization, then Background. On either version you can also right-click a photo in File Explorer and choose Set as desktop background.

To put the same photo on the lock screen, open Settings, then Personalization, then Lock screen, and choose Picture.

What a wallpaper can't do

A wallpaper is a still picture. The desktop looks the same on day one and on day thirty, so the photo reminds you of the goal and keeps no record of the work you put in. The wallpaper also sits behind every open window, and for most of a working day the desktop is covered.

A tracker that changes when you check in

Reveal the Dream for Windows starts from the same idea, a photo of your goal, and covers the photo. Pick 7 or 30 days. Each day you check in, one more piece is uncovered. A missed day stays covered and nothing resets, so the photo shows your real record.

There are two ways to keep your journey in view while you work:

  • The mini window is a small window that stays on top of your other windows, with your photo, the day, and a live countdown to your next check-in. Drag the mini window to a corner and it opens there next time. The mini window works on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • The widget sits on the Windows 11 Widgets Board, on version 22H2 or later. Here is how to add the widget.

Both are free, along with one journey at a time.

Finish the journey, then make the photo your wallpaper

When you check in on the last day, the whole photo is uncovered. In Journeys, choose Save Image on the finished journey to keep a copy, which is free. Set that file as your wallpaper with the steps above, and your desktop shows the goal you uncovered one day at a time. A small Reveal the Dream watermark is optional, and the app leaves the watermark off unless you switch it on.

The short version

Open Settings, then Personalization, then Background, choose Picture, and browse to a photo of your goal. A wallpaper stays the same every day. For a tracker that changes when you check in, use the Reveal the Dream mini window or its Windows 11 widget, then save the finished photo as your wallpaper at the end.
