A Habitica alternative where a missed day costs no health
Habitica turns your to-do list into a role-playing game. You make an avatar, and every task you finish in real life earns gold, experience and items. It is free and open source, and it has a big following: more than 5 million downloads on Google Play, with 4.7 stars from more than 75,000 reviews.
The game has stakes. Miss a Daily and your character loses health. Some people do their best work with that pressure. For others, a bad week that costs a level is the week they stop opening the app, and that is a common reason to look for a Habitica alternative. Details below were checked on the US App Store, Google Play and Habitica’s own help text on 14 September 2026.
What Habitica does well
- Tasks that pay out. Habits, Dailies on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule, and a to-do list, all earning rewards for your avatar.
- Friends. A party lets you team up for accountability and fight bosses by completing tasks, and challenges share a task list with other players.
- Plenty to collect. Gear, pets, seasonal events and avatar options that include wheelchairs, hair styles and skin tones.
- Reach. iPhone and iPad on the App Store, Android and a Wear OS app on Google Play, and the Habitica website, all kept in sync. Its store listings also mention reminders and widgets.
- Open source, run by a small team with help from volunteers.
How a missed day works in Habitica
Habitica’s own help text is clear about it. A missed Daily costs you health. If your health drops to zero, you lose a level, your gold and a piece of equipment.
There is a way to take a break. The Pause Damage switch in Settings stops your own missed Dailies from hurting you while you are on holiday or unwell. During a quest you can still take damage when a party member misses theirs.
What Habitica costs today
Its App Store listing says Habitica can be fully enjoyed for free, and paying is a way to support the team. The US App Store lists subscriptions at $4.99 a month, $14.99 for three months, $29.99 for six months or $47.99 a year, and gems, its paid in-game currency, from $0.99. Subscribers get an exclusive gear set each month.
It holds 4.3 stars from more than 3,300 ratings on the App Store. Google Play lists the Android app as containing ads, and its last update there is dated August 27, 2026.
How Reveal the Dream is different
Reveal the Dream has no health bar. You pick a photo of one goal, choose a journey of 7 or 30 days, and the photo starts covered in one piece per day. Each check-in uncovers a piece. You can see how that looks with your own picture at revealthedream.com/try, in the browser, with nothing uploaded.
A missed day leaves its piece covered and costs nothing else. Every piece you already uncovered stays uncovered, there is no level to lose, and the next day starts as normal. I wrote about that choice in habit tracker without streaks.
It is a quiet app. There is no party, no gear and no chat, and it needs no account. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Android, Wear OS and Windows, with a widget that shows the photo on each of the home screens and desktops it supports.

When to pick which
Stay with Habitica if a game keeps you going, you like having something at stake, you want friends in a party, or you manage lots of tasks and to-dos, all for free.
Try Reveal the Dream if losing health has ended a good run for you before, if one goal matters more to you than a task list, or if you want your goal on an Apple Watch, a Mac or a Windows PC. The free version has no time limit, and Premium adds several journeys at once, custom lengths and rest days, which uncover nothing and never count as missed.
